WHY/HOW/WHAT???

Until recently one thing Athens lacked was an outlet that could unite our community’s fringe performers — those who work outside the box: street theater, circus and cabaret performers, burlesque and vaudeville, performance art and art installations, avant-garde dance and movement, comedy and improv, experimental art and film and music. The Classic City Fringe Festival (now an offical 501c3 Non-Profit in Georgia) has filled that gap. The CCFF, in it 3rd year and still growing strong, has an amazing event in store that celebrates and unifies Athens’ Fringe Community of performers and artists with a worldwide Fringe community. At the CCFF we particularly appreciate the unconventional, the marginalized, the experimental, and the original, but That’s not to say that we don’t also love and welcome traditional theater!

Just take a look at our list of performers and showcases we have lined up this year…. there are some fresh faces joining us for the first time coming from all corners of Georgia (Atlanta, Rome, Cleveland, Lawrenceville, Augusta, and Macon), Plus some that are traveling from places such as: New Orleans LA, Tallahassee FL, Charlottesville VA, Sapphire NC, and Lancaster PA. We even have a few returning performers from past years who once again wish to share their art with Athens including: Milyssa Rose, dok V, Kilted Creature, Athens Playwrights’ Workshop, Badass Storytelling Quartet, and more!

WHERE???

The first Fringe festivals were held in Edinburgh, Scotland in the 1940s after several independent and experimental theater companies were denied access to the city’s thriving annual drama festival. Outraged but undeterred, these companies began their own alternative festival, held in pitched tents and storefronts on the outskirts of town… Staying true to this precedent the CCFF adopted the goal of exploring alternative uses of spaces around town. To this end we have teamed up with local real-estate company “Fred’s Historic Properties” to host our very first ever “FRINGE POP-UP THEATER” located in the former Lazy Shopper location at: 361 E. Clayton Street, Athens, GA.

The CCFF will be taking place at these participating venues around Athens:

Fringe POP-UP Theater (former Lazy Shopper location at 361 E. Clayton Street)
Pixel & InkTrio Gallery
Flanagan’s (downstairs)
The World Famous
JOKER JOKER Gallery (after party)
Mellow Mushroom (basement)

BYOV Locations:

Flicker Theater & Bar
120 Kendene St, Athens (a private residence, being used to host theater production)
